Kumba, Cameroon — The Member of Parliament for the Kumba Urban Constituency, Hon. Tabot Lawson Bakia, has stepped in to rescue the structure that will host the newly created Government Technical College (GTC) Ekehmueh in Kumba II Sub-Division.
The intervention comes after the school structure, located within the Government School Fiango complex, was vandalized last year, resulting in the theft of roofing sheets and leaving the facility in need of urgent rehabilitation.
Mayor, DO Seek MP’s Intervention
Following the creation of GTC Ekehmueh, the Divisional Officer for Kumba II Edwin Nkenya Ngwana and the Mayor of Kumba II Council Chief Mbachu Jacob Kay visited the structure and after evaluating its state, contacted Hon. Tabot Lawson Bakia to seek his intervention in preparing the school for an effective take-off. Responding to the appeal, the Member of Parliament immediately mobilized funds to sponsor the renovation of the school structure.
Eight Classrooms Under Renovation.
Renovation works are currently ongoing on the eight-classroom structure, with roofing operations already underway. The rehabilitation project is expected to include the installation of ceilings and repairs to the doors, among other works, to ensure that the facility is suitable for teaching and learning. The intervention is aimed at giving the newly created technical college a facelift and providing a more conducive environment for students and teachers.
Education as the Backbone of the Economy
In his remarks on the intervention, Hon. Tabot Lawson Bakia described education as the backbone of every economy and said public policy must treat investment in schools as a long-term development priority. He noted that rehabilitating GTC Ekehmueh was not merely a response to vandalism, but a practical expression of the public duty to protect educational institutions and expand opportunities for young people.
The MP also spoke philosophically about education as an investment in human dignity, responsibility, and the future of society. In his view, a classroom is more than a physical structure: it is a space where knowledge, discipline, creativity, and civic values are cultivated. By restoring the eight-classroom facility, he said, the community was helping to build the foundation upon which future generations could shape a more productive and humane society.
The rehabilitation of the structure is expected to contribute to the effective functioning of the newly created institution.
MP Expands Community Development Interventions
Apart from the rehabilitation of the GTC Ekehmueh structure, Hon. Tabot Lawson Bakia has recently been active in intervening in road infrastructure across various quarters and communities in Kumba.
He has also shown particular interest in supporting communities that lack access to basic amenities, including water supply and electricity, as part of his broader efforts to improve living conditions across the constituency.
