Kumba City Council Unveils 2026 'Keep Your Quarter Clean' Competition
Kumba, Cameroon — The Kumba City Council has officially launched the fifth edition of its "Operation Keep Your Quarter Clean" competition, reaffirming its commitment to promoting environmental sanitation and community participation across the city.
The launching ceremony took place in Kosala I on Thursday, August 6, 2026, as part of activities commemorating the 15th African Decentralization and Local Development Day.
The event was presided over by the Senior Divisional Officer for Meme Division, represented by Mrs. Hermia Njonje, Second Assistant SDO for Meme Division.
The ceremony brought together administrative authorities, municipal officials, traditional rulers, quarterheads, bloc leaders and the population.
They were encouraged to take greater responsibility for maintaining clean and healthy neighbourhoods.
Addressing the population Kumba City Mayor Greg Mewanu urged them to actively support the initiative, emphasizing that environmental cleanliness is a shared responsibility that contributes to better public health, sustainable development and an improved quality of life for all.
Following the official launch, inspectors began the first assessment exercise in the six participating Kosala quarters alongside 45 other quarters across the city.
The inspection marked the official start of the 2026 competition, which is scheduled to run until December. The annual "Operation Keep Your Quarter Clean" initiative aims at promoting a healthy competition among communities while encouraging residents to maintain cleaner, safer and more sustainable living environments throughout Kumba.
At the end of the competition, outdtanding quarters in the competition will be awarded.
The initiative is part of Greg Mewanu's vision to "Making Kumba Great Again".
