Mamfe, Cameroon — The President and General Manager of the South West Manyu Cocoa Farmers Cooperative, Chief Tabe Besong Oben Richard, has denied allegations that the cooperative pays CFA15 million every week to the Chief of Sector for the South West.

The business magnet addressed the allegations on Saturday, September 19, in Nfaitock II (Mile 18) Mamfe during the installation of Difang Roger as President of the Bamenda Road Axis Cocoa Union.

He described the claim, alongside a separate allegation that the cooperative paid CFA70 million to a customs official, as false information allegedly aimed at damaging the reputation of the cooperative and its leadership.

According to Bessong, the matter has already been reported to the competent authorities.

He called for calm, saying investigations and due process should be allowed to take their course.

He also called for greater protection of cocoa farmers.

During the event, Chief. Besong also urged the newly installed leadership of the Bamenda Road Axis Cocoa Union to make the protection of farmers a priority.

He announced stronger measures against cocoa buyers accused of manipulating weighing scales, a practice he said could negatively affect farmers' earnings.

Chief. Besong further defended the cooperative's partnerships with traders from the North-West Region, stressing the importance of cooperation and peaceful relations among stakeholders in the cocoa sector.

Stakeholders express support.

Traditional rulers, farmers and cocoa buyers from parts of the South-West and North-West Regions who attended the ceremony publicly expressed support for Chief Besong. They called for peace, transparency and greater cooperation among farmers, cooperatives, buyers and other actors involved in the cocoa trade.

This come at a time when cocoa stakeholders in the region are pushing for stronger organisation and better protection of farmers' interests amid concerns over trading practices and the management of the sector.
